Following the quick tips covered in this article will ensure that you’ll take the best possible room scan.
- Where to stand and how to prepare your room
- Taking a wide-angle picture
- Accepting the preview
- Overlapping your wide-angle picture with a scan
- Measuring the room
1. Where to stand and how to prepare your room
Stand back to get a wide perspective
- Stand far back to fit as much of the room as possible into the vertical photo. The best spot to stand when scanning is with your back against the corner or wall of the room facing the space you want to design. Make sure that part of the floor is captured, too (we need this as a point of reference).
- The app will combine multiple photos to produce a wide-angle multi-dimensional picture of your room.
Standing far from the space you want to design will give you a wider perspective and improve your scan
Capture in good light
- Make sure your room is well lit.
- Open blinds and turn on lights if necessary.
Rooms captured in bright conditions will produce much better images
2. Taking a wide-angle picture
Start in the center
- You will frame your wide-angle picture towards the center of the area you want to design.
- The app will then guide you to pivot your phone to 5 targets (wait until you see a check mark before moving to the next target).
You’ll be directed to start in the center and asked to hit 5 targets for your wide-angle picture
Please, limit side-side motion when taking your wide-angle picture

Keep your elbows in and pivot your phone in place
3. Accepting the preview
Take a look at the capture preview you'll see on your screen.
- Does it include the whole area you want to design?
- Is it bright enough?
- Is it sharp enough?
If you answered "yes" to these questions, tap Yes, continue!
Use the scan preview to determine if the picture looks good
4. Overlapping your wide-angle picture with a scan
- After taking the wide-angle picture, the app will ask you to align the image you see on the left side of your screen with the one on the right.
- No need for perfection here – roughly align the images and tap Done.
The split screen helps overlap the picture with the live view
5. Measuring the room
Take a wide figure-8 scan (this step has to be repeated)
- During the measuring step, stand in place and sweep your phone in a slow and wide figure-8 motion. Start measuring at the center of the area you’d like to design.
- Cover a wide area in front of you. Ideally, you can cover the entire area that will be captured in the wide-angle picture.
Sweep over the area you’ll be designing – make sure that your camera sees the floors, walls, and ceilings of your room
Take another wide figure-8 scan
- Take a big step to your left or right when prompted, and then tap Done.
- You’ll see a split screen that guides you to align pictures 1 and 2 – hit Done when ready.
- Perform another figure-8 motion.
Congratulations, your capture is ready to be uploaded!
